Foreign Fermentation / Plate Magazine

Last minute, I received an assignment to work on “Foreign fermentation” for Plate’s January/February 2013 issue. It was a fun challenge working on such a tight deadline. Whenever I would feel stressed, I would remind myself that I was just tracking down fermented Asian meats – nothing life or death.

Los Angeles Ice Theater / SKATING Magazine

My second feature for SKATING was on the Los Angeles Ice Theater. I was completely unfamiliar with ice theatre before writing this story, but I learned a lot about the discipline and how it really is a melding of theater and sport. The group is a lot of fun and I hope I get to see them perform live some day.

Rooms With A View / Design Bureau

An editor I had worked with at Time Out Chicago moved over to Design Bureau and asked me if I’d like to write for him. I was totally unfamiliar with writing about interior design, architecture and art, but I’m always up for a challenge. This is my first small piece for the magazine, on German photographer Menno Aden‘s aerial room photography. It’s a really interesting perspective and I wonder how my room would look shot from above. In a few issues of Design Bureay coming out next year I’m writing restaurant profiles, so stay tuned.

Let Me Drink Cake / Chicago Magazine

My first article for Chicago Magazine on boozy desserts is in the October 2012 issue.

This was a lot of fun to write, although I felt slightly awkward pulling out my breathalyzer at each restaurant. It gave me the perfect excuse to go gallivanting around town and try yummy desserts though. I definitely hope to work with Penny and the folks at Chicago Magazine again soon.

I’m thrilled that they used my photos throughout the slideshow, except for the photo they had taken at The Gage. I didn’t expect that, but I’m glad they thought my photos were good enough.

Johannesburg / Delta Sky Magazine

After spending three months in Johannesburg, I was thrilled to write this “One City, Five Ways” article for Delta Sky and share some of my favorite places with the world. This was a fun one to write and I love how it looks laid out on the page. This is my first story for Delta Sky, and Sarah, my editor, was great to work with. Hopefully I’ll have the chance to work for them again soon.

Gracie Gold / SKATING Magazine

I hung out at Center Ice of DuPage for a day to interview Gracie Gold along with her mom, Denise, and twin sister, Carly. Everyone was very nice and welcoming, allowing me to wander around the rink snapping photos, while trying not to interrupt anyone’s practice session.

This was my first feature for SKATING Magazine; I’d previously only written shorter stories. I was lucky that Gracie lived near me and SKATING always does features on junior national champions for the summer. Editor-in-chief, Troy Schwindt, took a chance on giving me this longer story and he said he was really happy with my work.
